I grew up in East Africa and lived and studied in England for some time before continuing my studies at the University of Toronto. I went on to complete graduate studies at McGill University and taught for a number of years in Montreal before joining the Camosun faculty in 2003.
My
literary interests are particular to 20th century
literature, classical mythology, travel writing and
cultural studies. My current research is focused on
teaching postcolonial literature. When not teaching or
grading papers, I'm usually walking my dog or engaged with photography.
Part of my task as a teacher is to engage students in an ongoing negotiation of literary meaning and to draw attention to the act of critical reading. My approach to teaching centers on challenging students to develop as readers and writers. I have a keen interest in students' perspectives and ideas. I strive to limit being merely prescriptive in my teaching, but essential to my
task is a context in which
we can mutually
demonstrate respect and
clarify our
responsibilities to each
other. Your class participation
and hard work is vital. I'm
here to help, so don't
hesitate to ask questions
and seek my help.
You'll find info on some of the courses I teach above and from time to time, I will add links
or notes of general interest below.
